Bilberry powder: is it the latest superfood?

15 January, 2016

Woah there – if you're wondering what a bilberry is, think of it like blueberry's cooler and wittier cousin from Finland. He's a few inches taller, ridiculously good looking, bilingual AND he helps old people cross the street. And by that, we really mean bilberries are super tasty and incredibly good for you. Phew (got there eventually).

We recently stumbled across Finnberry, an awesome company who use handpicked nordic berries to make their bilberry powder. We've been playing around putting it in our smoothies, juices, mixing it with yoghurt and putting it on waffles – and (SPOILER ALERT!) we loved it so much that you'll find a big 100g bag in The Aspen Box. Not only that, if you use the code 'FITTY25' on Finnberry's website, you'll get 25% off their 100g bags and free delivery. Don't say we don't treat ya'll!

Why's it so special?

  • It's an antioxidant powerhouse with 3 times the amount of antioxidants than goji berries (suckers).

  • It's highly concentrated, and equal to around 270g of fresh bilberries.

  • It's rich in vitamins E and K, and minerals copper and manganese, and gram for gram it contains more vitamins and minerals than fresh berries.

  • It has high levels of flavonoids and carotene.

  • It's naturally high in fibre.

For the geeks out there...
Bilberries are one of the highest sources of anthocyanins out there, and they make this powder a) blue and b) so effing special. Anthocyanins act as antioxidants to fight free radicles (which are linked to ageing and diseases), and are believed to have anti-inflammatory, anti-viral and anti-cancer properties – you only have to Google it to see the amount of research out there.

So yes, it's definitely stealing the superfood title right now. And if you've been experimenting with it, be sure to tag us on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter!

Peace x
